Business Intelligence

CORADIX’ approach to Business Intelligence (BI) is to focus on how we can help you to “increase and maintain the relevancy of BI in your organization”.

There are many ways to achieve this goal, but there is fundamentally one outcome that really matters – the ability to create business value from information assets, and this business value must translate into profit or efficiency gains in order to remain relevant in the long term.

The approach to achieving these goals can be very tactical – like harvesting the low hanging fruit by mining easy to collect data and transforming it into valuable knowledge to make better decisions. Or, developing a complete Data Management Strategy that will allow for continually increasing the business value of an organizations information assets. This may include a Data Warehouse, BI tools, and processes that allow an organization to exploit leading edge ways of analyzing the past, and predicting future trends in order to make better business decisions.

The tactical and strategic approaches are not mutually exclusive, and in fact you should at doing both simultaneously.

We recommend that you begin the process with a clear assessment of the status quo by conducting a CORADIX BI site survey. Having a clear view of where you are in terms of organizational capacity and IM maturity are essential to know before attempting to build your BI roadmap.

Case Management is a general term used to cover business functions involving a set of activities that start and finish over a period of time. Examples from the public sector include:

Case Management involves scheduling and tracking activities like meetings, approvals, reviews, emails, phone calls and such in order to resolve or otherwise close the ‘case’. The Data Management Association – (DAMA-I) has for over 40 years been the authoritative voice of the Data Management community, and in recent years published the Data Management Body of Knowledge (DMBOK). It is made of these areas:

The DAMA-DMBOK – is a document distributed by DAMA International intended to be a definitive introduction to the Data Management Body of Knowledge. It contains information about best practices, methods and definitions to support the data management function. It has 10 Knowledge Areas:

  1. Data Governance…the exercise of authority, control and shared decision-making over the management of data assets.
  2. Data Architecture…the method of design and construction of an integrated data resource that is business-driven, based on real-world subjects as perceived by the organization, and implemented into appropriate operating environments. It consists of components that provide a consistent foundation across organizational boundaries to provide easily identifiable, readily available, high-quality data to support the current and future business information demand.
  3. Data Development…is the analysis, design, implementation, testing, deployment and maintenance of data.
  4. Data Operations…Providing operational support from data acquisition through to purging.
  5. Data Security Management…the process of ensuring that data is safe from unauthorized and inappropriate access or change. Includes focusing on data privacy, confidentiality, access, functional capabilities and use.
  6. Data Quality Management…the application of total quality management concepts and practices to improve data and information quality, including setting data quality policies and guidelines, data quality measurement, data quality analysis, data cleansing and correction, data quality process improvement and data quality education.
  7. Master-Data Management…Processes that control management of master-data values to enable consistent, shared, contextual use across systems, of the most accurate, timely and relevant version of the truth about essential business entities. (also referred to as Reference Data Management).
  8. Data Warehousing…the operational extract, cleansing, transformation and load processes, and associated control processes, that maintain the data contained within a Data Warehouse…./ Business Intelligence Management…The operational, administrative and control processes that provide access to BI data and support knowledge workers engaged in reporting, query and analysis.
  9. Document / Content Management…control over the capture, storage, access and use of data stored outside structured databases.
  10. Metadata Management…processes that create, control, integrate, access and analyze meta-data (data that defines and describes the characteristics of other data, used to improve both business and technical understanding of data)

Open Data

With Open Data initiatives in the Federal Government it has never been more important to look at your Data! Governance and stewardship are essential parts of the DM strategy. Without data stewardship and governance it is impossible to properly implement, manage and sustain the enterprise DM effort let alone provide Open Data!

For 19 years, CORADIX has been helping the Canadian Federal Government manage its documents and records. Our skilled professionals have led our clients through ad-hoc systems approaches, RDIMS implementations and reviews, Recordkeeping Directive compliance and now GCDocs readiness and implementation. Throughout the experience, we have participated with industry groups, software vendors and user forums to maintain a sound understanding of all aspects of Electronic Document and Records Management (EDRMS) and its role in supporting modern, public sector Information Management practices.
